Efgordon & Lepage71 led the field down to the green in the 78 lap Feature Race Thursday night in Phoenix. Point leader Bear328 started last in 11th place. In turn 1, there was one accident--with Dhib8 rubbing into Pitbull4 while getting up to speed, putting him up and into the wall and out of the race that fast. Meanwhile on lap 1, Efgordon kept the lead from the pole to pick up an important 2 points. Everyone was single file by the end of lap 1, as 10 of the 11 cars were in a close pack on the non-draft track. On the following lap, Ffstbone007 moved to the front for 2 laps, picking up his 2 points...until he was passed by Lepage71 on lap 4. As Lepage took the lead, there was still incredible racing occuring with 10 of the cars still within just about 1.5 seconds. On lap 5, G ROCK drifted up the track and into the wall in turn 1, falling way behind the leaders. A large wreck was barely avoided on lap 6 after Pitbull4 got into the back of Lepage71 entering turn 1, pushing the 71 car up and into the wall...causing a major jam on the backstretch with Efgordon, Ffstbone, Bear, Viagra6car, and KTIN3. Fortunately everyone continued on without major problems. Amazing at least to myself (V6C), 9 cars were still in the lead pack on lap 9, with 4 rows of side-by-side racing occuring. In that pack was Bear328, who moved up from last and took the lead on lap 9, getting 2 points towards his championship run. But unfortunately, Bear & Pitbull4 strangely hit the wall at the same time but seperately on the track on lap 15, putting both of them way behind and basically out of the race. By lap 16, the lead pack was down to 5 as the cars spaced out just enough to lose the small amount of draft off of each other. Viagra6car took the lead on lap 19 to pick up his 2 points as well, trying to stay alive in the championship. Lepage passed by him a lap later though and pulled away as a 4 car battle emerged behind him. Viagra6car moved by all these cars and pulled back up to the 71 machine, which they then pulled away by over 3.5 seconds at one point. Viagra6car took the lead on lap 21 and stayed there for the most part until lap 43. This is when he commited "the worst move of his career." He was slowly pulling away from Lepage71 by a few tenths, so decided to push the car a little harder to try and drive away with the win. He got loose off turn 2, steered to correct, clipped the edge of the wall and got turned into the slanted wall on the backstretch head on. He was heavily damaged and drifted all the way back to 5th. Lepage71 just drove conservatively the rest of the race and won by a lengthy margin, picking up his 5th career win, tying him for most all-time. Probably the greatest battle of the race occured between Reef & KTIN3 on the final 2 laps. Reef pulled to the inside of KT into turn 1 with 2 to go, they bumped wheels on the backstretch, then Reef cleared KT into turn 1 of the final lap. KTIN3 then got a run to the inside of Reef on the backstretch, followed by a big bump down into turn 3. Then coming off turn 4 they bumped again, with Reef crossing the line just 0.003 seconds ahead of KTIN3. Lepage71 takes over the points lead with his win for the first time this season. He is gonna be tough to beat with just 5 races left on the schedule, including IndyRC_T this upcoming week. |
