December 10, 2019 – Lake George, NY…Keith Powell survived a wild Blind Date Night that yielded good results and the win at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), opening round of the 2019-20 Empire State Super Series Tuesday night at Diamond Speedway. Diamond Draw After practicing on three potential tracks, Diamond Speedway by Mike Jackson was drawn out of the hat and most of the racers were pleased to find they'd be competing on this pretty track. It was the first time the SUPRS racers had ever raced at the track, but Powell, driving the Icings on Top Mayfield Missile, was able to figure out the tricky, off-camber turn four and qualified second fast behind Bob Gangwer who set a track record of 14.561 seconds. Becker Strong, Powell Passes Carl Becker, who had a poor time trial run, but then won his heat race, ran well all night and led the first nine laps of the feature. Powell tried multiple times to pass the cagey veteran, but Becker fought him off. Finally, Powell was able to muscle his way past Becker. Powell was never too far out front, as Gangwer followed him around Becker, but the Carrollton, OH racer maintained his lead. Tales of Traffic powell and Gangwer encountered heavy traffic around lap 15, and from there it was as nerve-racking as a real blind date. Powell, dodged, swerved, and danced his way through a rash of cars that, at some times, were setting sideways on the track. Somehow Gangwer was able to stay glued to his tail. The most harrowing incident came just as the lead pair came out of turn four to complete the half-way point of the 50 lap feature. Incredibly, both drivers were able to miss Nelson Rodrigues and Rick "BlackNight" Walls who had both spun out on the front stretch. Top Two Better at Opposite Ends Initially, Powell seemed to be better coming off of turn four, as Gangwer struggled with that corner. Gangwer though, found his sweet spot at the other end of the track, and worked the outside groove coming out of turn two multiple times to stay glued to Powell’s rear nerf-bar during the second half of the race. Next NASCAR Heat Race SUPRS next NASCAR Heat race will be after the New Year when the drivers head to the "Northcoast Home of the Supermodifieds," Sandusky Speedway for the two-day, 12th Annual Terry Gibson Memorial. The Terry Gibson Fast 50 on January 14, 2020 is a a warm-up to the following night's Terry Gibson Memorial 100. The winner of the 50 lap race on the 14th becomes a guaranteed starter for the 100 lapper on Wednesday January 15th. This two-night event is modeled after the Sandusky Speedway Supermodified Nationals where the International Supermodified Association runs the first leg of the real supermodified "Triple Crown." Both races are part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net Supermodified Challenge and are open to all drivers that have registered to race.
