Speedyman11 Wins 2016 Patch Cup Series Championship Opener at Daytona, Cautions Begin

The 2016 Patch Cup Series Championship Season opener, the Daytona 200 presented by Grumpy, at Daytona International Speedway began with Speedyman11 on the pole and Breeze outside from Friday's qualifying. Speedy and Breeze held on to the top two position at the drop of the green flag while the field worked into a single-file line before the first lap was complete. On lap 4 ltfireman1604 got loose in the tri-oval and spun off the track but managed to avoid any damage. Later that same lap Breeze got loose and went hard into the inside wall with heavy damage and shaking up the field. puttzracer blew a tire on lap 14 bringing out the first caution flag of the night. During caution flag pit stops Donaldson ran into the rear of the #88 of ltfireman1604 when exiting his stall adding some unneeded front-end damage to the #5 Chevrolet. Fordly56 and BlackKnight also collided on pit road when exiting leaving BK spun in the wrong direction. Speedy led the field to the restart on lap 18. Fordly56 got loose on the front stretch and took BlackKnight out along the way on lap 21 but ARL Officials completely missed the event and no caution was called. Fordly56 retired from the race on the next lap. The second round of pit stops, these ones under green were uneventful. But on lap 30 Donaldson went high exiting turn 2 scraping the wall and backing up the field putting Redimuss and KartRacer63 into the wall bringing out the second caution. Donaldson took the lead following yellow flag stops which brought every driver to pit road. BlackKnight caught the left-rear of the #46 puttzracer Chevrolet on lap 37 bringing out the third caution. Chaos occurred when the race was about to go green as ltfireman collided with Redimuss and Donaldson, leading to Speedyman11 bouncing off the wall. This was followed by the pace car loosing control, taking our Breeze and BlackKnight on his way off the track. The fourth caution flag came out on lap 43 Redimuss got loose after hitting the apron sending him into Donaldson who was outside and back down the track to take out ltfireman and Breeze. At the restart on lap 46 ltfireman hit the right-rear of Redimuss sending him hard into the outside wall, taking out Breeze and puttzracer along the way and causing caution number five. Caution six occurred on lap 52 after ltfireman scraped the wall exiting turn 2 stacking the field up. This in turn led to Redimuss taping lt and sending him into KartRacer who spins across the track collecting lt, Redimuss, puttzracer and Breeze. KartRacer63 in the #63 Chevrolet took a spin through the grass on lap 56 but recovered without damage. Green flag pit stops began on lap 63, cycling race leaders around for several laps. Multiple drivers began wrecking while entering pit road on lap 65 creating caution seven. BlackKnight and ltfireman1604 led the field to green with 10 laps to go. Caution eight came out on lap 73 when ltfireman1604 smashed the wall at the start/finish line and collected KartRacer63. The green flag came out with five laps to go, Donaldson and Speedyman11 leading the field. Racing was intense with such little time remaining. KartRacer63 bounced off the wall and down the track into puttzracer on lap 78 of 80 bringing out the ninth caution. Just three laps remained in the race so officials worked as fast as possible to restart the race with one lap to go. The race restarted with one lap remaining and Speedyman11 leading along side BlackKnight. Speedy jumped to an early lead entering turn 1, giving him enough room to capture the victory when ARL Officials mistakenly called a caution. Cautions are not supposed to come out on the final lap of a race. The turn one final lap wreck started when BlackKnight cut down in front of Donaldson, sending BK into the infield and Donaldson back across the track. In the end BlackKnight, Donaldson, ltfireman1604, Redimuss and puttzracer received heavy damage. With Speedyman11's victory came with 45 laps led and the Most Laps Led award. Finishing second was ltfireman1604 who walked away with the Hard Charger award. KartRacer63 came in third and picked up the Fastest Lap award, running a 44.020 second lap.
